Wooden bow ties crafted in the foothills of Mount Olympus

Who would have thought wooden bow ties would ever hit the fashion scene? Well, it seems they’ve made their way onto the market. They were made for the first time by two Greek brothers in the foothills of Mount Olympus in Pieria, in the northern part of our beautiful homeland, Greece. Here is the story of how it all began.

Once the economic collapse in Greece set in, two brothers returned to their village to start their own business with innovative ideas. Leonidas Souras is a 30-year old architect and together with his 28-year-old brother and mathematician Charalambos returned to Kilondros, the place they called home. There they were able to make use if their father’s carpentry workshop which was perfect for them to start putting their ideas together and create unique wooden accessory pieces.

The small workshop along with their father’s tools, saw them build up a company of their own, “Exallo,” which means crazy in Greek. They set out to create handmade wooden accessories, and mostly….wooden bow ties. What some may have thought of as a crazy idea, turned out to be an amazing business venture. The brothers used interesting varieties of wood from the Mediterranean and other exotic places. Their pieces became so popular that they now have an online store which offers customers a selection of 23 different bows, each named after celebrities’ pets.

They really out their heart and soul into each piece which costs between forty and seventy Euros, weighing thirty kilograms. Clients receive their wooden bow ties in a luxurious handcrafted wooden case.

Buyers also have the additional option of creating their own bow tie, even choosing the wood which they prefer to use. The Greek brothers have another bonus to the purchase of these items, as a portion of the profit made on each bow tie is donated to charity.
